2020, the decade of intelligent automation begins

%

It is expected that by 2030, 50% of all the existing jobs today will have been automated. Today, organizations have begun to combine robot automation processes with artificial intelligence and other technologies that allow the creation of new ways to work.

According to Deloitte, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions are expected to have a steady growth in the next decade, in addition to the existing solutions which already integrate artificial intelligence.

The results of combining automation with artificial intelligence processes has made a difference for a number of companies: their profits have increased by 9%. By contrast, companies that only use automation without AI have reported a 3% increase in their profits.

For the fore mentioned reasons it is believed that the next decade will be key for intelligent automation.

1. Jobs with a greater risk of being automated in the next decade

Repetitive jobs and those which require physical strength

  • Automation is already displacing factory workers, performing customer service tasks and other processes which don’t require human judgement.
  • This the case of the employees at call centers, packers, stevedores and manufacturing jobs in general.

Technical professions

  • Professions which demand simple mental skills and/or physical expertise, but which require no higher education or a university degree.
  • Radiologists, drivers, baristas and other similar workers fall into this category.

College educated professionals

  • Automation does not respect professionals with university degrees.
  • Diagnostic medical doctors, lawyers, accountants and architects are running a greater risk of losing their jobs to automation

2. Jobs with a lesser chance of being automated in the next decade

Professions which imply emotional management

  • The function of emotions and their influence on human interaction has proved to be complex to understand scientifically. Thus, emotional management it is a very difficult skill to integrate into an automated system.
  • This is the case of psychologists, professional teachers and communication professionals.

Decision-making professions which are context-based

  • Whenever there is a change in a specific or given context this modifies the way in which factors interact with each other and can also introduce new factors which configure new scenarios the organization.
  • This is the case of professionals who have the ability of taking into account the effects of change on a specific context and who possess the skill critical thinking, such as social scientists.

Soft skills which are difficult to automate

  • Critical thinking, the ability to communicate in for assertive manner and problem-solving skills are not likely to be automated in the nearest future, since they can’t be replicated by a machine.
  • The same occurs in the case of interpersonal skills, adaptation learning abilities and good decision-making.
